“Preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century, and to lead for a more prosperous and peaceful world.”
The Global Leadership course is an unleveled, BHS Social Studies elective. It is open to 10th-12th grade students. Our most important work is project-based and its success depends on students collaborating in large and small groups. You are expected to ask questions, share ideas, and challenge your fellow students. There is little homework and no tests or quizzes; students are assessed by their portfolio work at the end of each unit. We will have several opportunities to engage with really interesting speakers who do work that is global in nature. Typically students will learn new material, then design a proposal, an outcome or participate in a simulation that provides an opportunity for students to apply new insights and skills. Every student at BHS has unique strengths, experiences and insights. You will not be selected because you may have had more opportunities and experiences than others. Instead, we are interested in how you intend to use your perspective to add to the class. If you are applying to additional application-based social studies electives (Race Awareness, Social Justice, EPIC), please indicate your first choice. You may only be accepted into one of those classes at a time.

Prior to applying:
- Please read a full course description prior to applying. Here's a brief video description.
- Request from a teacher or BHS staff person to serve as a reference. They should agree in advance; you do NOT need a letter of recommendation from your reference.
- What makes a strong application? Avoid spelling and grammatical errors; elaborate with examples; illustrate what you are passionate about.
- We recommend that you prepare your open responses in a word or Google doc, then paste them into the application. The open responses are:
- Why are you interested in taking the Global Leadership class? What do you hope to learn and do?
- If you could have an impact on one global issue, what would it be and what would you like to do?
- What is unique about your life experience or perspective that you could share with class and enrich the classroom environment?
The application is due: Friday, March 10, 4 pm for the 2023-2024 school year. Apply here. Contact Mr. Grande for more information: [email protected].
